The ultimate recycle:
"Toilet Bike Neo"
Hello everyone. It's Neoue, the TOTO TALK staff.
When the production of the running toilet "Toilet Bike Neo" was decided,we settled to make it eco-friendly
However, the question was; How can we make it eco-friendly?
There are many ways to make it "eco-friendly".
Thinking that it'll be best if it's related to toilets,
we began our research. We then found out that we might be able to
use man's waste can be used as the energy.
This is the ultimate recycle...or maybe reuse?
As we furthered our research, we figured that it is called
"Biogas". After methane gas is extracted from organic matters
included in garbage, it is then refined into an energy.
And apparently, there are few Biogas plants in Japan.
As we, TOTO are trying to share people our approach to the environment,
we thought that we would definitely like to use this Biogas as the fuel.
There are taxis that run with natural gas,
so why can't we make motorcycless that run with methane gas?
That is how it was agreed to produce Toilet Bike Neo as the
ultimate recycled energy motorcycle.
It was later on when we found out that the natural gas used in cars and
Biogas have different components.

The keyword "3R" includes the two words I used today; "Recycle" and "Reuse".
The third word is "Reduce."
・Recycle: to remake things into a usable material
・Reuse: to use things over and over again
・Reduce: to make less
The first letter of these three words is R.
TOTO's eco-friendly renovation "Green Remodel" also includes a word that
starts with an R, but unfortunately, "Remodel" is not included in the 3R.

【The Story So Far】
The TOTO TALK project is where TOTO speaks to everyone what we want to share.
This year, we decided to share our approach to the environment (starting with the TOTO GREEN CHALLENGE) through the "Running Toilet".
Hello everyone. It's Neoue, the TOTO TALK staff.
It may sound easy, but embodying the "Running Toilet" was quite tough.
For example, take a look at the illustration above. This was drawn by one of the staffs,
but it completely ignores physical law, so it is impossible to make it happen.
The staffs made numbers of rough sketches after this.
The drawing you can see in this page's background are the sketches,
but none of them were exactly right.
That was when we reconsidered the conditions for a Running Toilet
1. It can be made within half a year.
2. It is big enough to be noticed when it goes see people.
3. It points to the future of toilets.
Here is the ultimate sketch we came up with.
Simultaneously, we decided the name as well.
We named it "Toilet Bike Neo" from its looks,and also after the newest TOTO toilet "NEOREST".
At the same time, we decided to add another function:
to be eco-friendly.
Since this bike is going to be running while telling how important the environment is,
we thought that this Toilet Bike Neo has to be eco-friendly as well
Now, here's the question; How is it eco-friendly?

TOTO NEOREST can save up to 4.8liter of water, which is about 68%
of the conventional products (when compared to 13liter toilet).
Which means, if there are 4 members in a family, you can reduce up to 84kg of CO2 emission. 84kg is more than the average weight of fathers in Japan.

Another futuristic toilet!
New project from TOTO TALK!
It was about half a year ago in the Chiba Museum of Science and Industry.
Said Neo version 2
"I want to meet more people."
Hello everyone. I'm Neoue, the TOTO TALK staff.
Starting today, September 12th 2011, the TOTO TALK project will restart.
We decided to start a blog in order to let people know about it.
“TOTO TALK”is a project in which TOTO speaks to people what we want to share.
Last time (from November 2009 to August 2011), since we wanted people to know that "TOTO does much more than just making toilets", we made the "Futuristic toilet: Neo 2" which had everything we dreamt of.
It was half a year ago when Neo 2 suddenly mentioned
"I want to meet more people."
Indeed, since Neo 2 was a fixed bathroom, it could not move.
Not to mention that most Japanese bathrooms are fixed...
If immovable, it can only talk/meet people who came to see it.
That was one of the problems we had.
That is why, for the past six months,
we have been planning to make a toilet which can go see everyone.
Although this project was working below the surface, the purpose was clear; it was to make a running toilet.
Now,
since TOTO TALK is a project which speaks to people what we want to share,
we have one important theme we want people to know about.
"Environment".
It may sound obvious, but the environment is really important.
It's so obvious that it is almost embarrassing to restate that the environment is important.
Still, TOTO thought: let's restate it, then.
TOTO does various activities for the environment.
We call it the "TOTO GREEN CHALLENGE".（※for details, check here.）
It would be our pleasure if this would become a chance for everyone to reconsider the environment.
So the project started after completing the running toilet.
Again, the purpose of this project is to tell everyone TOTO's approach to the environment.
In this blog, we will introduce the production process of the running toilet in order, which started half a year ago.

The amount of CO2 emission from kitchen and bathroom facilities is equal to that from other home electronics and cars. In order to contribute to the goal of 25% reduction of the entire CO2 emission in Japan by year 2020, TOTO will halve the CO2 emission from kitchen and bathroom facilities by year 2017.

※TOILET BIKE NEO does not have the mechanism to run on the rider's waste. It runs biogas fuel (fertilized, purified and compressed livestock waste and household wastewater) provided by Shika-oi Town in Hokkaido and Kobe city.
Therefore, the NEO REST seat doesnot function as a toilet, and has been
created for promoting TOTO's environmental efforts.TOTO is not involved
with any motorbike or biogas production business.
The Washlet, CeFionTect, Tornado Flushing…
TOTO, which has been evolving Japanese toilets, is in fact a professional in all kinds of plumbing products.
TOTO has set up the project “TOTO TALK” to inform everyone about what we have done in the past, and what we will do in the future.
From November 2009 to August 2011 we created a conceptual model “NEO version 2” that contains all kinds of desired functions,
could be seen at the exhibition and on the web.

This year…
Though NEO version 2 was equipped with 23 of those desired functions, there was one function which it regrettably did not have… That is, mobility.
Though we were fortunate enough for many people to come and see it, as well as those who visited the website, it was impossible for us to go and meet people ourselves.
Therefore, TOTO TALK this time will be making a toilet
which can move.
Also, using this mobile toilet we would like people to know that we launched “TOTO GREEN CHALLENGE” in 2010, which is TOTO’s environmental initiative.
From a plumbing product manufacturer’s point of view, we would like to inform everybody about the environment.

Since our motive is to inform everybody about environment, we also would like to put more effort into making this “running toilet” eco-friendly.
So we decided to create a futuristic and the ultimate eco-friendly motorbike toilet “TOILET BIKE NEO”.
For one month from October we will be promoting about the environment and will go on a journey over 1000km from a factory in Kokura to Tokyo.
This site will notify you about plans, production and the final product.
Since our motive is to inform everybody about environment,
we also would like to put more effort into making this “running toilet”eco-friendly.
So we decided to create a futuristic and the ultimate
eco-friendly motorbike toilet “TOILET BIKE NEO”.
※TOILET BIKE NEO has been created for promoting TOTO's environmental efforts. TOTO is not involved with any motorbike or bio-gas production businesses.
Along with electricity-usage and cars, plumbing products is responsible for the majority of CO2 emission from homes. So by 2017, we will aim to provide plumbing products which emits 50% less CO2. (※relative to 1990)
In order to do this, we will be taking on various challenges.
This is our vision for the environment, named “TOTO GREEN CHALLENGE”
TOTO GREEN CHALLENGE has 3 goals from different planes:
- Product and services: Provide plumbing products that emit 50% or less CO2 (※Relative to 1990), expand “HYDROTECT” products and services that have air purification functions (NOx Removal)
- Manufacturing : Not only the functional aspect of products, but production, logistics, and promotional activities.
- Socially responsible & an educator : To contribute to the environment with society from the biodiversity perspective, and to train people to have a higher environmental conscience
As a plumbing products manufacturer, TOTO will reduce impact on the environment, working very intensely , on a global scale.
